In the Spotlight: Lake Geneva
Geneva is the European hub of diplomatic and business tax, with the positioning of many organizations global headquarters in its operative cosmopolitan center. Although only Switzerland ™ € s third largest city, after the investment Bern and Zurich, Geneva is regarded by many as the heart of the Continental Europe. In 1827, its size meant that the French mathematician Jacques Charles François Sturm and Swiss physicist Daniel Collodon could become the first scientists to measure the speed of sound in fresh water on it.
The lake has continued to make history too. Painted by British artist JMW Turner, In 1810, Lake Geneva has also served as a site for Mary shelleyi € ™ s infamous 1816 summer vacation, which took place at Lord Byron € ™ s Lakeside Villa Diodati and during which his most famous work, Frankenstein, has taken shape.
The lakeâ € ™ s borders three townships bordering the Swiss Red Crescent – Geneva, Vaud and Valais – allowing everyone to landing sites along the lake, popular with tourists and local residents. The lake provides a number of opportunities for watersports, including sailing, waterskiing, swimming and surfing.
™ € Lake hasna t always been conducive to swimming, however. Lac Leman has suffered during the 1960s and again in the 80s by disastrous levels harmful pollution, which reduces both its visibility under water and fish stocks virtually nil.
More recently, however, watersports be returned to Lake Geneva, which provides a thriving tourism market. In addition, the lake has been given a modern treatment in the form its spectacular Jet dâ € ™ Water, which flows 500 liters of water per second at a height of 140 meters in a style reflected in the design of Olafur Eliasson € ™ s The New York City Waterfalls. Jet dâ € ™ Water can be seen from an altitude of 10,000 feet, with the Many flights to Geneva soaring over the water spout approaching or departing the airport in Geneva.
