Have to be more specific than just sticking up a question out of a textbook or something when no one else can read your mind.

Tussionex Cough Syrup: Sustained Release Question?
I was prescribed Tussionex Cough syrup for cough. Here’s some background info to frame my question. I have taken Hicodan/Hydromet and Hycotuss before. Hycodan give me palpitations,probably because of the decongestant. Hycotuss is the only one I took without side effects.
This is the first time for Tussionex and I am afraid to take it because of the sustained release deal. I want to know if it will give me palpitations, but don’t want those to last 12 hours while it’s releasing. Here’s the question: if I mix the dose in water, will it dissolve the sustained release capsules? Does it have to be in water for the 12 hours of release time? If you have any experience or pharmaceutical background, I would greatly appreciate the answer. Thank you in advance!!!
PS. My PCP first wrote for Hycotuss, but we soon found out that it is no longer manufactured. Go figure…
Sustained release formulations usually cause less adverse reactions because the drug is allowed to be absorbed more slowly over time. Immediate release cause more adverse effects because the dose is rapidly absorbed and the conc/effect peak is much higher. Susutained release have a lower conc/effect peak and therefore they may not exceed the adverse effect threshold. I would not be as worried. TAKE THE MEDICATION AS DIRECTED do not alter the pharmacokinetic profile by mixing it with water, this can be very dangerous.
