Collecting Chinese snuff – Magical Stone Pictures!

For a number of years, we've created, if I say I, as a whole Snuff Bottle important collection. My wife, thank you God, shares my interest in these small bottles, but maybe I should warn you, collecting anything is like a bug, once caught, is with you forever and can be quite an obsession!

Have you ever searched for pebbles or shells along the shore sea, to select the color or shape and found a call to their treatment, so that everything could not throw it away? If yes, you have the makings of a serious collector.

Part of the pleasure of owning these bottles is the tactile appeal found in handling.

Unlimited possibilities

There are also a number of possibilities so vast and diverse collection. A collection can be based on the great Chinese art refined in each domain that would be good examples can be very important in this type of art in miniature.

There are collections based on jade stone hard, others prefer glass and plaster or China, or the enamel and cloisonne, or you would like to start a collection of paintings.

I can not imagine how difficult it is to receive a collection of bottles on Chinese painting, but they exist. Notable signed landscape scenes and portraits, including excellent calligraphy (often poems) have actually been painted inside glass bottles and stones.

Some bottles uncut feature collections of rare stones, or lacquer, or amber and ivory. Most collections up favorite collectible, but also a variety of other precious bottles. He collections on the theme, animals, or color as the imperial yellow or blue and white, and as there are so many possibilities, no two collections are always the same.

Links International

For anyone considering the purchase of Snuff bottles I should explain that this is an international search. He even a bottle of China "Snuff International Society" with a large membership and assets. Having been members for a period of time, we found that peers are people so interesting and enjoyable.

There is a connection between a manifold that leads to friendship, to what we encounter in the auction room is! It's worth joining because it is a very informative quarterly journal, full of photographs in color. The surprising information is freely shared between members and the concessionaire. So much can be learned in this way, in fact much more than by studying the many beautiful, beautiful books on the subject.

dangerous temptations

Most people first encounter these bottles is likely to be in the antique shops, auctions or antique fairs, otherwise in a museum or perhaps responding to a collector. Once seen, some people feel the temptation the next time you come across a bottle to buy, but too often these first purchases are of very poor quality. Later, after gaining more knowledge, these first bottles so often prove disappointing. They can often become costly mistakes. Unfortunately, too many bottles on the poor, some are even brand new, is enjoying the collective madness. Even an article like this can get someone to go shopping without sufficient knowledge, I hope.

My advice is that, in addition to joining the company, participate in some auctions and visit some skylights specialty shops.

When you go to auction houses, make sure go to the clinic day, usually one or two days before the sale. The first impression is probably one of disappointment, because there will be a bad batch of bottles and see so many all lying behind the glass, is not the best way to present them.

Ensure select few that call and demand to inspect. Then you'll be able to manage some, and that is where the magic begins. I do not know how to explain what is happening, but there is something a tactile pleasure that comes only from handling a good bit.

Our Collection

I must say that my first bottle did not immediately my attention. Surrounded by many beautiful and colorful bottles of all shapes and sizes in a dealers Showcase, a bottle of brown and beige seemed rather dull. Over time, I'm round of inspection and before long, I knew I had to buy.

Only another collector can see that the irresistible impulse that seizes one as the closest to this feeling of love at first sight. I said that students tend to increase, and is a sign that retailers take into account, and collectors, of course, always desperately trying to camouflage our interest. This bottle was purchased, which remains a favorite, and formed the basis of our collection.

Our collection includes many types of bottles, but especially with hard stones, known as agate, each image is unique because no two alike. To appreciate these bottles that I have to say more about how a stone bottle was made. All Snuff bottles were made very early to be used and must be small, but capable of storing large quantities of tobacco, not too heavy because he was often in the manga. All those bottles were designed comfortable in the hand and sealed with a stopper to keep the snuff at its best.

In Europe, hinged boxes have been used, but may be moisture in China has led to prefer bottles with corks. All bottles have a stopper snuff in a cork is fixed, and the other end of the cork is an ivory spoon. These plugs are rarely coincides with the bottles, of the size and shape. It was a matter of personal choice as to what type and color was considered best to go with the bottle.

Bottles recessed well

bottles were carved in stone in a variety of forms, but always with a very small opening in the neck, usually about 5 mm in diameter. Imagine a piece of quartz rock that is absolutely impossible to scratch, even with the stainless steel knife However, in the 18th century this was carved into a bulbous bottle.

Here are drilled in the neck and emptying through this small hole, so that even difficult areas like the shoulders of the bottle are very slim. Fine bottles are so low that look more like glass blowing, and correctly described as that "on edge. If placed in a container of water that trap enough air to float.

Although I have mentioned drilling that has been used information available on methods of production is incredible, like a drill and cutting discs were foot "Heath Robinson business. However, I think, after several years of experience, who have gained more control and feel than is possible with modern electronic equipment (required to work in jade as parts of the stone may break while others are very difficult).

Most of the stature achieved by grinding jade, precious stones, sand and other abrasive particles. First by drilling and then carefully pour grinding with tools special. These tools were made by hammering metal forms on the abrasive particles that, once incorporated, fold easily to achieve the hardest parts.

China appreciates these wonderful stone bottles and is made of many kinds of stone, the purity of the material, including Jade is greatly appreciated. Chalcedony quartz bottles when `show notable brands thin shell formed from the formation of crystals.

Default Photos

Everyone I'm sure you can appreciate these bottles, as beautiful and pure forms of the stone can not fail to impress. What I find even more fascinating is the incredible way that deliberately, brilliantly exploiting flaws and inclusions often present in the rocks.

Most quartz and jade stones have an outer layer of a different color, especially stones from riverbeds. They are also more defects and material defects in color, often deep into the stone. Sometimes it may be inclusions as the skin, very thin, in other large droplets found.

The problem is that nobody knows exactly what is on the rock, such as cuts are made, secrets are revealed stone. With this type of material that "Picture Agates are made. The best of these incredible bottles to appear as if the inclusion, which forms the image appeared in the right place, as if to order!

There are different types of work within this group of cylinders and the former are what we call "Cameo sizes. These take advantage of an outer skin or a type of bubbles as they can be very thick and are carved in relief. Another type is called "Shadow Agate and use these marks on the bottle which, with the help of a small size, it creates an image. Finally, the most fascinating are called "Silhouette Agates' but in this group without apparent size is needed. The image is produced mainly by the angle and the choice of the shape and size and position of the bottle to be formed in the rock. These bottles must be seen to be believed.

What is really amazing to me is the fact that there is a few of these bottles with pictures on both sides!

Unfortunately, some of them were signed. Just know that there was a certain school of carvers known as "School" Suzhou. His works are easily recognizable by the style and the quality of the sculpture, in addition to their use of each mark on the stone to form the image. The bottles are amazing as well, but there is more works that tend to look too stiff and does not the stature of the more fluid artistic atmosphere of master carvers. Unfortunately, hardly any of these bottles are well back.

Our first bottle

Thus, to describe my first purchase was a bottle "shadow image agate involving short stature, and well dug. This is a most appropriate theme and color of a bottle of red inclusions Snuff it used to show "Ho-Shang Putai. He is always depicted as a very fat man with a bare chest and abdomen and is the patron saint of tobacconists. In this bottle is struck by a bat while sitting next to some leaves of tobacco snuff. The bat for the Chinese is a symbol of luck. You can see how easy that is very well placed in the bottle, however, that the head and a suggestion of his hand were carved. (See the picture via the link in the bottom of this article.)

He now has a number of agates and picture to illustrate the different types described, image of the duck with mushroom Lingzhi the peak is a good example "Silhouette". Indeed, the fungus is a symbol of wishing long life. This bottle is very rare because there is a hollow carved originally to create image building served on a platter. (See the picture via the link at the bottom of this article.)

Finally, a bottle of pride, images of fish on both sides: the pair of fish carved cameo and Chinese represent fidelity and happy conjugal rights in marriage. On the other side of a fish and aquatic plants to use any marks on the stone, all in a bottle well shape is very well hollowed. All those bottles are presented were conducted between 1750 and 1860. (See the picture via the link at the top of this article.)

Rating

To effectively assess the sizes of hard stone, the first consideration should be worried about the impression artistic whole. You must be satisfied that the work seems well composed and well placed and the images are formed flows rather than stiff and awkward. The next step is to take a closer look at technical skills. When I see a sort of cameo in size to study the shaping and finish the background, near the edge of the sculpture. The poorest bottles which can be indented, uneven and not as polished as the rest. Examples looks really good as if the raised cameo part has simply been attached to a bottle well trained. his recorded work best is very precise and gives the details. Looking closely at a poor bottle engraved parts can be very crude.

Care, amazing glass imitation stone bottles exist. To verify this, use a magnifying glass and look for bubbles or pinholes on the size of the surface. As a last resort, if still in doubt, a penknife scratch easily if the base is glass, while a stone does not dial.

In assessing the value of all works thorough verification of damage is essential. With stone bottles on the following points should help. First, evaluate effectiveness of the bottle is empty, holding hands light. Inspect the stone from all angles of light and the light of there. In case of failure stone is often visible as a star from the point of impact. Some stones have natural flaws that are not cracks. Then take a good overview on the edge of the foot and neck of the bottle, because these areas are more susceptible to damage. If it does not seem to reflect the proportions to ensure none of them was low down to remove a chip.

When inspecting the neck as seen looking into the surface of the bottle top should be concave and not flat. Bottles that had the neck repaired to eliminate the damage is still flat, and you can be sure not original.

snuff boxes were used

There is an additional criteria Personally, I think it's important. Most of the best stone bottles were made between 1750 and 1860, although many poor bottles have been made since then to today. These bottles were not performed end-to-use, and some call "pieces of office and may be easily identified. They are a bit hollow anyway. Some just have a hole drilled in them and feel too heavy. They also tend to be very striking in the choice of materials, with impractical rather high and sharp carving that feels most uncomfortable in the hand. There are other so delicately carved that one instinctively knows that could not survive actual use. It is only possible to make these decisions in comparison. Experience is necessary and takes time to acquire.

Small is beautiful

There are advantages to collecting very small items, because they are not too boring, and can easily be trapped. This is very important if your partner does not share your interest! So can a beautiful screen completely without disturbing your home.

Try to be sure they are very enthusiastic about the collection before you buy. Once a you put one in your house and look so small and attractive, this is a matter of time before coming to the conclusion that small group of bottles will be much better. This tends to recur in some people's minds and that's all hooked!
