Do you know why pregnant women and nursing mothers should supplement their diet with omega-3 per day?
Well, the omega-3 DHA and EPA, found in salmon and other oily fish, are vital for growth and optimum development of their growing baby.
It's a proven fact that women who eat fatty fish on a regular basis to increase their chances of having a full term, higher infant birth weight with a brain to mature, better vision and central nervous system fully developed.
And after birth, the baby's need for DHA and EPA continues. These omega 3 fatty acids are responsible for early brain development of babies newborn, retina and central nervous system.
Did you know that an infant's brain continues to grow and develop rapidly during the first year after birth? In fact, it tripled in size during this period. And 70% of the rapid growth of the brain is made up of DHA and EPA.
Therefore, the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations and the U.S. National Institute of Health recommends that all pregnant women breastfeeding and eating oily fish at least 2 times a week. Alternatively, they can supplement their diet with extra pure fish oil which gives a combined total 1 gram per day of DHA and EPA.
But here in the United States, 85% of women are deficient in these omega 3 oils. And nearly 20% are so low that DHA and EPA can be detected in blood at all.
So, if Mom is deficient in Omega 3s, her baby did not receive food from the brain it needs to be healthy and intelligent.
Pregnant women in the United States has said it is important eat balanced diet and take prenatal vitamins containing adequate amounts of iron, calcium and folic acid. But it about it.
Very few pregnant women and lactating mothers are always advised by their doctor to take supplements of Omega 3 fish oil. Why this is so, I have no idea. But I guess that will change in the future.
Meanwhile, the only way baby can get these essential oils is the mother's diet or supplementation. This is why so many pregnant women and nursing mothers who want a healthier, happier, smarter babies take personal responsibility to get more fish oil omega 3 in their diet.
Fish and fish oil are healthy foods. Although mercury contamination is not a threat if you avoid fish eat large predator, such as shark, swordfish, king mackerel and white snapper (tilefish).
In fact, a recent Harvard School of Public Health Research Study concluded that the health benefits of fish oil, particularly pregnant women and nursing mothers, far outweigh any threat perceived toxicity of mercury. So this is not a concern that the person needs to worry.
So if you are pregnant or who nursing and want a baby, healthy, smart, eat more oily fish on a regular basis and take a high quality supplement fish oil. And if you are not breastfeeding, you can press a little with the fish oil DHA in the formula for your baby.
Oil fish is essential for your child's health and well-being. Make sure this is enough.
