What is the daily recommended amount of EPA and DHA?
Hi! I’m currently taking a salmon oil supplement with 180mg of EPA and 120mg of DHA. I was wondering if this was enough. I found a couple of GNC fish oil supplements that provide 360mg EPA / 240mg DHA in one, and 647mg EPA / 253mg DHA in the other. Should I be taking a supplement with these kinds of amounts or is it too much?
Most bottles recommend 3 pills of the 180/120 ratio, which is what you are taking. Some recommend 2 and some recommend 4, but 3 tends to be the average.
That being said, there’s not an RDA for Fish Oil, so there’s no “required amount”, which makes it hard for many people to know how much.
I’m willing to bet that 360/240 product you found is per 2 softgel dose (very common to make their product look better than the others) and the 647/253 would probably be in multiple pills because there needs to be some fat in the pill as a delivery system among other things… if it were that much in 1 softgel, the pill would be so big it would choke almost anyone. LOL!
That being said, there are liquid forms that recommend several hundred mg of EPA and DHA daily in one or two tsp/tbsp, so there is a much higher limit than a few pills that are safe to take. None of those you mentioned are going to be “too much” as long as you follow the recommendations and aren’t sensitive to Fish Oil. Good luck and I hope I helped!

EPA DHA Fish Oil – What Is It and Why Do You Need It?
What is EPA DHA fish oil anyway? Is there any truth to the hype about health benefits? Should you bother to spend good money on supplements? These are valid questions so let’s see if I can answer them here.
First, let’s understand what we mean by EPA DHA fish oil.
Without blinding you with too much science, EPA stands for Eicosapentaenoic acid; DHA stands for Docosahexaenoic acid. They are both long chain, highly unsaturated fatty acids and are the two most important fatty acids that make up omega-3s.
DHA is the most complex of the omega 3 fatty acids–it has 22 carbon molecules as opposed to EPA’s 20. This means that your body can convert DHA to EPA if it needs to, just by dropping a couple of molecules, but it can’t go the other way around.
The significant thing about this fatty acid is that it is essential for the growth and development of the brain in children and babies. In fact, the human brain pretty much runs on this omega 3: the brain is roughly 60% fat and around 25% of that is DHA.
It improves learning ability, can protect against Alzheimer’s Disease and improves eye function. Together with EPA and the other omega 3s, it protects the heart, improves circulation and helps to ward off cancer.
So how does your body get this wonder substance?
Well, your body can’t make its own omega 3 fatty acids–it has to get them from your diet. The best sources of these two important omega 3s are fish and algae.
Unfortunately, in our Western diets, we often don’t eat enough fish to get a healthy dose of omega 3s. Most of know we should eat more oily fish, but this can be contaminated by mercury, PCBs and dioxins, and fish populations are generally declining the world over.
So what can we do? A high quality EPA DHA fish oil supplement might be your answer. A supplement that sources its fish from clean, uncontaminated waters like the Southern Ocean off the coast of New Zealand will insure you avoid ingesting contaminants. And a product that uses fish species that are plentiful and highly regulated will give you confidence that your need for more omega 3s in your diet won’t harm fish stock sustainability.
Make sure you get one that lists both EPA and DHA fish oil on the label. These two work in synergy so don’t be fooled by products that list only one or the other.
