Carlsons Fish Oil – How Does it Compare Against Other Omega-3 Supplements?
Carlsons fish oil is one of the best-selling brands on the omega-3 supplements market.
But you have to ask yourself: is Carlsons fish oil the best value for your money?
When you visit Carlsons fish oil website, you see that they guarantee purity, effectiveness and quality.
They sell tablets, capsules and liquids. Carlsons fish oil is said to contain Norwegian oils.
This is slightly contradictory when you consider that their facilities are located in the United States.
They guarantee purity, but they do not give you any proof of how pure their products are.
I personally like to see independent government approved laboratories test the product I’m buying.
Carlsons fish oil is also contains flavoring, which is often used to cover up the bad smell of fish or rancid oils.
When you learn more about the omega-3 supplements and oil from fish, you learn that when the oil is extremely pure and fresh there is no smell to cover up.
Carlsons fish oil also costs about $20 for a month’s supply. I have found at least six other brands that have higher quality oil in them, are cheaper, and have been proven to be pure and effective.
You also want to look at the EPA and DHA content of the omega-3 supplement that you buy. Carlsons fish oil contains more EPA and DHA. DHA is one of the fatty acids that makes up about 30% of the human brain.
Your body can convert DHA to EPA, but not the other way around. When you’re looking for a high-quality omega-3 supplement, I suggest that you look for one that has been proven effective, pure and high-quality, and one that has more DHA than EPA.
I’ve also read recent studies and clinical trials on the power of blending tuna and hoki oil together. These two oils have a synergistic effect that makes this omega-3 supplement up to two and a half times more powerful than anything on the market today.
They are both harvested from around the New Zealand coast, where the purest waters on earth can be found. This is what I personally use or recommend, because the purity and quality is one of the best out there. I highly recommend that you do your own comparisons, so you can find the best product for you.

Is it good to take Cod Liver Oil as a supplement?
Today I bought a bottle of Carlson’s Norwegian Cod liver oil (liquid). I read somewhere that this oil is a good supplement of omega 3 oils and also because it has vitamin D. I live in Canada where you see no sun for like 6 months so that’s why I got it and mainly because of Omega 3 fatty acids.

I was wondering if this oil had too much of a Vitamin A? I consume vitamin A in my daily food intake and adding this oil to my diet it seems it would be way too much.. I don’t want to go overboard as too much of Vitamin A can be harmful.
Also for omega 3 fatty acids I believe the content is too low.. Shouldn’t the EPA (Omega 3) amounts be higher than DHA (Omega 6) amounts?
If anyone has more understanding of this please share your opinion and I would greatly appreciate it!

You are absolutely right, you can not get enough vit.D from cod liver oil because of the high vit.A levels BUT I highly recommend you including cod liver oil as a part of your supplementation (up to 100% DV vit.A). Use vit.D3 for the balance of your needs.
Current recommendations from researchers for vit.D3 are for 35iu per pound – a 150# person needs minimum of 5250iu per day & the rda is 400iu. This amount is for minimal needs and does not account for depleted stores. March is when stores are at their lowest.
EPA & DHA are both omega 3 fatty acids. Cod liver oil is not a good source of EPA/DHA. DHA is the most important for health but doesn’t seem to be assimilated without EPA, so having a both is important. I highly recommend eating cold water fish instead of taking just the fish oil.
Omega 3 fatty acids are PUFA’s (polyunsaturated fatty acids) & extremely fragile & start going rancid as soon as exposed to air. PUFA’s are fine from *whole food sources* but when separated from the food, begin oxidizing immediately & cause free radical damage to the body. I highly recommend making an effort to get as much fish oil from whole food sources. I recommend eating sardines several times per week. Mackerel, herring, salmon & oysters are also good options.
Taking fish oil or krill oil is a convenient way to get EPA/DHA consistently but I’m still concerned about the degradation. Krill oil has naturally occurring antioxidants which make them somewhat safer but I still recommend whole food sources.
Another problem with ingesting “just” the oil, is that you are missing all the nutrition from the whole food source. The only oil I can see recommending is cod liver oil (mixed with butter or Coconut Oil/MCT to maximize bioavailability) & only because whole cod livers are not readily available.
I started eating 1 oz. canned oysters every morning for the naturally occurring zinc (170% DV) & found it also had 90% DV of B12 as well as getting 1g a week in Omega 3 fatty acids, EPA/DHA.

DHA is the most abundant omega-3 fatty acid in the brain and retina. Low levels of DHA have been associated with Alzheimer’s disease. DHA is depleted in the cerebral cortex of severely depressed patients.

Adding butter or virgin coconut oil will help make the Omega 3 fatty acids more bioavailable.
Whenever taking cod liver oil, remember the findings of Dr. Price. He noted that he did not get good results from cod liver oil unless he gave it concurrently with high-vitamin butter. Just why this is so is a matter of speculation, but we do know that the very unsaturated fatty acids found in cod liver oil cannot be effectively assimilated and stored in the tissues without the presence of adequate saturated fatty acids, the kind that would be provided by butter. This means that even regular butter would help support cod liver oil therapy; but Price found that the combination of cod liver oil with high-vitamin butter, from cows eating rapidly growing green grass, was nothing short of miraculous, reversing tooth decay and bringing patients back from the brink of death.
