Christians and other religions: what are your thoughts on cannabis (marijuana) for medicinal purposes?
Isn’t taking any other drug the same? Why is this treated so different?
-Marijuana is a plant created by “GOD”
-Aspirin is a salicylate-rich willow bark extract. (bark created by “GOD”)
Marijuana is also eaten in very small portions as well. Don’t think of it like the media has portrayed it for years.

i can’t understand why *every* Christian isn’t taking a *firm* stand for your “God-given right” to utilize & *grow* any plant in existence!
Is marijuana a plant? Does it have a seed?
God, Himself, says he *gave* it to you to *use*! — if you genuinely believe God spoke those words in Genesis.
Smoking it is *not* good for your lungs. i’ve heard of people who have had a lung *collapse* from it. The heat from smoking it could well cause you throat cancer, & the smoke & tar — lung cancer, in time. It *can* cause ulcers too (i know someone personally who testifies to that, having experienced it; & when he stopped, the ulcers cleared up). i’ve also heard reports of THC crystalline deposits in the brain, that *stay* there, from excessive smoking of marijuana.
But baked in brownies — you’re definitely eating it as a food.
Did you know that George Washington, the Father of the United States & our First President, grew marijuana?!
Indeed he *did*! He mentions it in his Diary — at least 4 times! (His Diary has to be one of the most *boring* Diaries in the world to read — but it’s really there; I checked it!)
He calls it “hemp”. It was largely grown for hemp rope — for the sailing ships. That doesn’t mean he didn’t *smoke* it, too!
The article i learned of that, from, *also* said that Washington & Jefferson mixed marijuana 50/50 with tobacco & smoked it *that* way, that Washington sent Jefferson some of his latest crop for that reason. (The article was in a hippie underground newspaper in the latter 60′s or early 70′s… maybe a Detroit one. i *should* still have it packed-back *somewhere*… if i ever run across it again.)
*If* that is true — just think! The Declaration of Independence *may* have been written when Thomas Jefferson was “high”!
i haven’t been able to find any ancient documents to *substantiate* that particular claim, tho — that Washington & Jefferson smoked it. *Maybe* it’s there in their Correspondence, somewheres.

Interesting Facts About Slippery Elm Bark
Did you know that you could drink bark? It’s true, when the bark is prepared as a tea that you drink, and such is the case with Slippery Elm Bark. Ulmus rubra is the Latin botanical name for the tree that produces what is sold as Slippery Elm Bark; the tree is native to the eastern seaboard of the United states. Other common names for slippery elm bark include slippery elm herb, red elm, moose elm, gray elm, soft elm and Indian elm. Online bulk herb processors carry this popular herb in several forms, including slippery elm bark extract and slippery elm capsules, as well as a powdered form that might be organic, kosher or wildcrafted.
The part of the Ulmus rubra tree that is used in making Slippery elm bark herb is the inner heartwood, which is red in color, indicated by the Latin word “rubra.” This inner slippery elm bark heartwood is ground into a powder, and this is most often how it is sold. Slippery elm bark herb may help with diarrhea, cramps, ulcers and indigestion, and in general may soothe the respiratory and digestive tracks. When used as a tea, the slippery elm herb becomes mucilaginous in texture, and this may help the herb to soothe a sore throat. Slippery elm bark extract or powder is also commonly used as an expectorant to relieve congestion in the throat and lungs. For sores, rashes and burns affecting the skin, the slippery elm bark herb may help to soothe the skin when applied externally. If you are pregnant, you should not consume slippery elm in any form.
Organic forms of this herb must meet stringent guidelines as set out by the National Organic Program, a law that was put in place in 2002. Individual agencies within each state that have the approval of the United States Department of Agriculture can offer organic certification to producers of organically grown products. The herbs must be grown on a farm where no synthetic chemical fertilizers or pesticides have been used on the plants. The land upon which the plants grow has to be synthetic chemical free for three or more years before herbs growing there can be classified as organic. Organic herbs must be kept separate from non-organic herbs, and complete records that cover the farm history, the way it is set up, as well as test results of soil and water must be included. Yearly inspections of the property are also part of the process that organic producers must follow in order to achieve the coveted organic certification.

Can anyone share what is the best way to extract herbs for homemade cream/lotion/gel base.?

I currently have some gotu-kola (fresh plant) + some dried fo-ti (he shou wu) bark, and I like to extract these herbs to make my own homemade cream/lotion/gel base.
What types of solvents should I use?
Normally it’s the alcoholic + water solvents, but I prefer not to use alcohol.
I was thinking to just use plain water as solvent by boiling the fo-ti bark + gotu-kola…but how do I preserve them as boiliing usually means using them up in 24hrs or 48hrs at best (if kept referigerated)…and how do I incorporate them into my cream/gel?
Any input will be much appreciated. Thanks!!
A good preservative is Witch Hazel, it has some alcohol in it, and you can boil your herbs in that easily as you can in water.
The biggest problem faced in making herbal products at home is shelf life. They do have to be made more often as they tend to spoil after a certain amount of time, but the quality of the product and the knowledge you are using only the best ingredients far outweighs the small inconvenience. The trick is to make them in small quantities, or just enough to last until you know you will need to replace them. Another simple point to remember is –
DO NOT USE YOUR FINGERS!
Without the harsh chemical preservatives, you can easily introduce bacteria. Use a small spatula or plastic knife or similar sterile utensil to lift out a small amount at a time when using the product.
By themselves, oils and waxes will remain stable. It is the introduction of the herbal infusion, or aloe gel, or unsterilized water that presents the problem of mold and bacteria. It is also possible to make or purchase extracts of the herbs you wish to include and use those in your products, rather than an infusion.
ALWAYS BOIL THE WATER or WITCH HAZEL AND STERILIZE YOUR CONTAINERS (since boiling water will destroy/melt some plastic containers, use alcohol to sterilize these). There are two natural preservatives which can stabilize your product. Tincture of Benzoin is available through your local pharmacy and has been used for a long time commercially. Gum benzoin, from which the tincture is made, is a gum resin from Asia. It is applied at the rate of 1 drop per ouce of product. Becoming more popular each year is grapefruit seed extract, available through herb supply outlets, and is applied at the same rate. Also known for its preservative qualities is vitamin E. It won’t take the place of the benzoin tincture or grapefruit seed extract, but 200 to 400 I.U. per ounce of product will not only help out with longevity, it’s also good for the skin.
When adding aloe to your product, be aware fresh aloe gel from a houseplant will develop mold quickly. It is better to purchase food grade aloe gel which has already been stabilized.
When a recipe calls for glycerin – it always means vegetable glycerin. At no time should you use any other type. It is always to be food grade vegetable glycerin.
Oils commonly used in cosmetic preparations are sweet almond, olive, safflower, peanut, corn, wheat germ, jojoba, and small amounts of vitamin E oil. Vitamin E can be purchased in gel caps which can then be pierced and the contents squeezed out. In the following recipes the ingredient lecithin refers to liquid lecithin. All lanolin used is anhydrous lanolin. Lanolin comes in liquid and anhydrous (water removed) forms.
One other ingredient you will require is beeswax. It melts at 148ºF, but the process goes more quickly if you first grate it. A hand held rotary grater with the large holes for grating makes short work of this.
Other tools which you will need are a blender, or mini food processor, or similar item which is capable of making mayonnaise, since the process of combining oils and water is similar. My personal favorite is a Black and Decker Handi-Mixer with a drink attachment. It’s a lightweight hand-held unit that does the job well and with little to clean up afterward. You will also need a stainless steel or enamel double boiler. It is absolutely essential to melt the waxes and oils in the top portion of the double boiler over hot water in the bottom pan.
To incorporate them simply add the infused water-with hazel-oil or other into your lotion/gal/cream base. You want to add enough to get the herbs into the product, but you also want to be sure the product keeps the desired consistency.
